Now we know why ex-Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning continues to sit in a Virginia jail on contempt charges.

Earlier today, prosecutors unveiled a conspiracy to commit computer intrusion charge against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who was arrested by British police inside the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.

The Ecuadorean ambassador allowed the police in to take Assange, 47, into custody after the government rescinded his asylum.   Assange had hidden out in the embassy for the past 7 years.  A hearing will be held to determine whether to extradite Assange back to the US to face the conspiracy charge. British police say that they arrested Assange, “on behalf of the United State authorities.”

Assange is charged with attempting to break into a Pentagon computer by breaking the password in order to access classified documents in March 2010.  There is no word on whether they were successful in their attempt.

Manning has been held in an Alexandria jail since early March for refusing to testify before the federal grand jury on the case.  Assange was indicted in March 2018.

Manning, who was convicted in 2013 of espionage, theft and computer crimes.  She was sentenced to 35 years, but it was commuted in 2017 by President Barack Obama.
