"Veterans Day really is an opportunity for us to celebrate the 20 million veterans — past and present — that served our nation," said Mike Kelly, assistant vice president of military advocacy at USAA. "We hope everybody is going to take an opportunity to honor their service through this campaign called 'Honor Through Action.'"

USAA's social media campaign, #HonorThroughAction, asks that Americans everywhere draw a "V" on their hand to recognize a veteran — whether that's your own veteran or a veteran you've never met.

"This campaign helps create conversations for those who haven't served," Kelly said. "And helps them to get a better understanding and appreciation for those who did serve. It's an easy way for people to share their personal story. And if they don't have a personal connection to a veteran, they can go to usaa.com/veteransday and look at some of the videos and other info we have up there on how to get involved with military nonprofits and how they can volunteer in their community."

Kelly's veteran connection is his father.

"It's an opportunity to talk about your veteran or multiple veterans. My inspiration is my dad who was a sergeant in the late 40s. He inspired me to join the Air Force."

The #HonorThroughAction campaign is also working to focus on how we can support and honor veterans year round through hiring initiatives and transition programs like the ones offered by Hiring Our Heroes

"At Hiring Our Heroes, we're working hard to make sure our transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses have the opportunity to seek meaningful careers," said Elizabeth O’Brien, senior director of Hiring Our Heroes military spouse program.

"When you empower a transitioning service member to find that first right fit for their job, they're more likely to stay in that job. Right now, 44 percent of transitioning service members leave that first job. So we want to make sure transitioning service members and veterans have the opportunity to find that right job," O'Brien said.
