On Saturday, May 4, University of Maryland University College is hosting a Military & Veteran Appreciation Fair with career and mentorship resources — and free beer and barbecue.

"This is all about appreciating veterans, active duty military, their spouses and families," said Kristin Byerly, director of Veterans Initiatives at UMUC. "We are bringing in veteran service organizations as well as our career services team. We're also offering scholarships for existing students based on some criteria — six different scholarships for $750 each."

Scholarships were awarded based on One2One mentorship, participation in Vessey VRC, or membership in the SALUTE Honor Society.

The event will honor this year's One2One Mentors, SALUTE Honor Society members, scholarship recipients, and soon-to-be graduates. Attendees can meet with industry professionals and veteran service organizations in the community.

"Really, it's just a matter of bringing in these different organizations and career services and allowing the veterans to have an opportunity to speak with some employers, speak with some service organizations, and get free beer and barbecue," said Byerly.
