Two U.S. Service Members Killed in Afghanistan

Two U.S. service members were killed in Kabul, Afghanistan today, June 26, 2019, according to a statement from NATO-led operation Resolute Support.

The names of the two service members killed in action will be withheld for 24 hours after notification of next of kin, as per Department of Defense policy. 

The service members were killed the day after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made an unannounced visit to the country. 

According to the Washington Post, the Taliban insurgent group claimed responsibility — the two were killed in an ambush in Wardak province 60 miles from Kabul.

The two deaths bring the 2019 total of U.S. service members deaths in Afghanistan to 10.
