Top Gun 2: Kelly McGillis knows why she's not in the sequel

July 31, 2019 - 2:20 pm

Kelly McGillis knows exactly why she isn't in the upcoming sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

“I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,” the Top Gun actress tells ET in an exclusive interview.

In the original 1986 movie, McGillis played Charlie, Maverick's romantic lead across from Tom Cruise.

McGillis told ET in this phone interview that she was never asked to be part of the upcoming movie, which is directed by Joseph Kosinski.

McGillis is now 62; instead, they went with 48-year-old Jennifer Connolly.

"I'm glad for her," McGillis said.

McGillis has been out of the spotlight for years, living in North Carolina, raising her two daughters.

The Top Gun: Maverick trailer was released earlier this month.  The feature film hits theaters June, 2020.
