“Feel the need.”

Those three words appeared front and center on a picture that Tom Cruise posted to Twitter Thursday, with the caption "#Day1." The Maverick actor is seen starring longingly at a F/A-18E Super Hornet, wearing a flight suit with the rank of a U.S. Navy Captain, which could mean only one thing…

It took Pete “Maverick” Mitchell more than 30 years to go from O-3 to O-6?

Oh, and filming for a Top Gun sequel has officially begun.

Top Gun took the world by storm in 1986, and for those of you who haven’t seen the iconic film (like my girlfriend. Really?), it tells the story of a hotshot naval aviator who is a bit too rough around the edges for the fleet. So naturally, they send him to the service’s foremost tactical fighter pilot school where he finds love, overcomes adversity, loses a friend, makes another, but most importantly, plays beach volleyball wearing nothing but blue jeans and dog tags. Ya know, military stuff.

The film was an instant success and hauled in a cool $376 million worldwide, just 32 summers ago. And we’ve been waiting for a sequel ever since.

Our collective prayers will finally be answered next year as Paramount/Viacom has slated the picture for a July 12, 2019 release date. The film has chances of being a serious summer box office slam given the sense of nostalgia that surely came pouring all over a generation who knows every word to “Take My Breath Away.” No? Just me? That’s fine.

Rumors began circling three years ago when chief executive officer of the production company for Skydance, David Ellison, announced a sequel to the flick was in the works.

Jerry Bruckheimer, Top Gun’s original producer, tweeted a picture with Cruise with the caption: “Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.”

And last May, Cruise’s co-star “Iceman” Val Kilmer shared a picture with a questionable-at-best angle on Instagram throwing his support behind the upcoming sequel.

friends said it's official - #TOPGUN2 was announced today. I'm ready Tom- still got my top gun plaque! Still got the moves! Still got it!

"Friends said it's official - #TOPGUN2 was announced today," Kilmer wrote in the caption of a photo he posted on Instagram that showed him wearing a t-shirt with his Iceman character on it. "I'm ready Tom -- still got my top gun plaque! Still got the moves! Still got it!"

But when it comes to film’s plot, mums the word. However, last October director Joseph Kosinski told, “The Navy is very different now than it was in 1986.”

“Back then, they hadn’t been in any way for 15 or 20 years at that point,” said Kosinski. “The tone of that movie and what those guys were doing was very different. Now, here in 2017, the Navy’s been at war for 20 years. It’s just a different world now, so you can’t remake the first movie.”

He added that the sequel has to “adapt” to a different reality.

“That being said, I certainly want to recreate the experience of that movie, which gives you a front-seat into the world of Naval aviation and what it’s like to be in a fighter jet,” said Kosinski.

But the approach, he said, “is going to be appropriate for the times we live in.”

Cruise's picture has since gone viral, and even encouraged some interservice rivalry with the U.S. Air Force weighing in.
