The Aloha State is home to more than 100,000 veterans.  Hawaii is the only U.S. state with two official languages, English and Hawaiian.  The official state fish is the Humuhumunukanukuapua’a fish, which means “trigger fish with a snout like a pig.” Sounds lovely.  Possession of a shark fin can land you in jail for one year.

Hawaii does not tax military retirement pay.

  • Property Tax Exemption.  Veterans with a 100 percent, service-connected disability are exempt from paying property tax.  This applies to their spouse also.
  • Motor vehicle tax exemption. Veterans with a 100 percent, service-connected disability are excused from paying all vehicle registration fees and taxes if the car is owned by the veteran and subsidized by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

  • On request, when applying for Hawaii state jobs, veterans’ preference points may be applied to veterans with an honorable discharge.
    • 10 points given to veterans with a service-connected disability and un-remarried spouse of certain deceased veterans, a spouse of a veteran unable to work because of a service-connected disability or the Gold Star mother of a deceased veteran.
    • 5 points given to eligible veterans.

Cemetery and Burial

  • There are seven state veteran cemeteries in Hawaii. Veterans residing in the state are eligible to receive certain end of life benefits.  For more information call (808) 233-3630.
  • Eligibility Determination Form.  Pre-needs determination is intended to simplify and assist the veteran’s next-of-kin at the time of death.  This does not reserve a plot or niche at the cemetery.  There is no cost for this.
