It’s one thing to watch a football game from the comfort of your couch, but getting a behind the scenes look at how your favorite NFL players get ready for the big day is a whole different experience, and if you’re a veteran in the DMV area, you might get the chance too.

Thanks to the Redskins Salute, service members, veterans and their families get the once in a lifetime chance to meet with Washington Redskins players at a variety of events. And I got the opportunity to get in on the fun.

As part of the NFL team's military appreciation club (the only kind in the entire league), I got the chance to try my shot at the NFL combine... well sort of.  From three-cone drills to the 20-yard shuffle, I got to test my *ahem* athletic abilities alongside Redskins players themselves inside the team practice facility in Ashburn, Virginia.

After a few hours of much-needed exercise, we were treated to an NFL-sized lunch with players in their dining facility and even took home a few Salute to Service souvenirs for the road. While I didn't exactly receive an offer from the Washington Redskins after running up and down the field, I did work up a good sweat and have tons of fun.

Membership for Redskins Salute is entirely free and events are held throughout the year. From getting VIP treatment at training camp and on the field meet and greets during military appreciation month, Redskins Salute allows players and military families to connect with one another through the game of football.

"We have an OTA [ organized team activities > day where folks can come out and watch practice from the sidelines and then get autographs from players afterward," says Sarah Gurian, affinity marketing coordinator for the Washington Redskins. "As we shift to the season we have a USO-Metro lounge where we opened last year where folks can come hang out and enjoy a quick bite to eat, maybe a beverage, enjoy some music before heading to their seats."
