Oldest WWII veteran in hospital, 'needs everybody's prayers'

The oldest living World War II veteran in the United States is gravely ill for the third time this year, and his family says he "needs everybody's prayers."

Richard Overton is 112 years old.

Overton was hospitalized with pneumonia last Wednesday, according to his cousin, Volma Overton Jr., who told KXAN, "He needs everybody's prayers," adding that last time he was hospitalized in August, the prayers worked.

Overton lives in Austin, Texas in the house he built 72 years ago.  He gained some attention earlier this year when funds were stolen from his personal bank account, but that money was reimbursed.  Connecting Vets covered the story of Overton last year - when he was fighting another bout of pneumonia - and his family set up a separate GoFundMe account they could use to pay for his 24-hour care.

Born on May 11, 1906, Overton served in the South Pacific in World War II, before he returned to Austin as a furniture salesman and then worked for the state government.
