The 21-year-old Marine recruit who died Saturday at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego has been identified as Pvt. Patrick Armando Vega.

Vega enlisted in the Marine Corps on March 12. On March 24, he received treatment from a cardiac arrest, according to Marine Corps Recruit San Diego. He was found unresponsive in his bed and a drill instructor conducted CPR until first responders arrived.

Vega was then taken to the Naval Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Pvt. Vega during this difficult time,” said Brig. Gen. William Jurney, commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

The recruit depot said a preliminary inquiry has been opened and officials are conducting a medical review.
