NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The family of a fallen Air National Guardsman from Long Island got quite a furry surprise Friday.

Thanks to the group Paws of War, the family of Master Sgt. Christopher Raguso welcomed a black lab that was rescued from a shelter in Louisiana.

The canine, Calvin, is one of 11 puppies that were slated to be put down for lack of space, but he and his littermates are all going to veterans and their families.

Raguso, 39, was was one of four members of the 106th Air Rescue Wing killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq last March.  He was also a decorated lieutenant in the FDNY and a volunteer with the Commack Fire Department.

The arrival of the pooch is bittersweet: Raguso's wife Carmela said she and her husband had been talking about getting a dog as a surprise for their two daughters when he returned from deployment.
