Our Employer of the Week series features one company each week that has made a commitment to hiring and supporting veterans. This week’s employer is Silent Professionals.

Silent Professionals is essentially a job placement board for combat veterans who served in a combat arms MOS. Silent Professionals helps place these individuals in private security jobs for the U.S. government, private corporations, and private individuals around the world.

But it's really much more than that.

Susan Gonzales, Silent Professionals founder, met her future husband in Houston, Texas after he had finished ten years as a private military contractor — it was his transition story that would spark the idea for Silent Professionals.

"Once a contractor is done, they're back in the states going through this weird transition," Gonzales said. "He was trying to find what he called a normal person life in America and wasn't really able to find a job. He didn't have a degree so he couldn't really even get in the door."

Gonzales' husband ended up working as an electrician apprentice for a year.

"His heart and soul wasn't in it. He just had this whole life and his skill sets and the valuable things he learned and he had nothing to transition into. And that's kind of how it all started," Gonzales said. "When I was listening to his story I saw what a great reputation he had through his entire career. People would always call him and ask if he could go on a job or if he knew people who could. He'd always have somebody."

And reputation is crucial in the private security industry.

"The thing about the security industry is people have to trust you," said Gonzales. "When companies want somebody, they don't want to just find somebody on a job board. They want somebody that has been vetted by somebody they trust. My husband happened to be kind of an essential point of contact."

A year later, Gonzales and her husband have used his connections, their joint experiences as veterans, data, and a scalable model to place over 2,000 veterans.

"It's more than just a job board. We actually do so much more in that we have conversations with the candidates. We get down to who exactly the employer is, what they're looking for, what will be a good fit, we have relationships with both sides. It's very involved, very personal."
