CNC Machines has a scholarship just for veterans

February 13, 2019 - 2:04 pm

Our Employer of the Week series features one company each week that has made a commitment to hiring and supporting veterans. This week’s employer is CNC Machines

CNC Machines has been part of the manufacturing industry for 15 years. The company works to buy and sell used machines to help start-ups and other companies obtain the resources they need for projects, products, and programs. CNC works to provide both small and large companies with top quality machines at a fair price. They also offer a scholarship specifically to help veterans enter the manufacturing industry.

"It allows veterans to take their certification towards manufacturing," explained Jonathan Alonso, director of marketing for CNC Machines. "Nowadays, there's a big manufacturing skills gap, and we're doing something to impact that and help the veteran community."

Any veteran pursuing a Certificate, Associates, or Bachelors in a manufacturing area of study is eligible. To apply for the scholarship, veterans just need to submit a 1,000-word essay on why they want to join the manufacturing industry and a DD214. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded in February, March, and April. The next deadline to apply is March 5.

"The keen attention to detail, the ability to learn fast, and the ability to adapt — veterans have the skills set to be great at manufacturing and engineering," said Alonso. "We saw that. And a lot of the manufacturers we were talking to were talking about not being able to get the workforce they need to be able to accomplish their jobs. It just made sense to be able to invest back into veterans."
