Department of Defense Releases Name of Marine Killed in Iraq

The Department of Defense has released the name of a U.S. service member who died during a combat mission with Iraqi security forces in northern Iraq, according to a statement from U.S. Central Command. 

Gunnery Sergeant Scott A. Koppenhafer, 35, of Mancos, Colorado, died August 10, 2019. This incident is under investigation.

Koppenhafer was assigned to the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, Marine Forces Special Operations Command, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Koppenhafer was in Iraq’s northern Nineveh province working in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, a joint task force formed in 2014 to combat Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.  According to the statement, the service member was advising and accompanying the Iraqi Security Forces on a planned operation.
