Author Janet Nolan first heard the story of the USS New York (LPD-21) on the radio and thought to herself  "wow, that's powerful." The story stayed in her head, and she realized she wanted to share it with a particular audience: children.

So it came to be that the building of the ship, using 7.5 tons of steel from the wreckage of the World Trade Center, is the subject of her picture book "7 and a Half Tons of Steel."

Nolan appeared on the Eye on Veterans radio show to talk about the book, the difficulties in discussing horrifying historical events like 9/11, and how children's books can help families talk through tough issues.
