What industries most closely match veterans' career goals after service? What companies offer the best veteran hiring and retention programs? Thanks to Navy Federal Credit Union and Monster, we have the answers to those questions. 

NFCU asked more than 1,000 veterans across the country what they value most in a civilian career and then, in partnership with Hire Heroes USA, identified the industries and positions that match those goals. Here are the results:

All of these industries and roles offer values like a strong sense of community, teamwork, matches for military skills, mission-driven organization, and other attributes that veterans consider when looking for the first step in their civilian career. As for the companies that could open the door to these industries for transitioning veterans, Monster's survey identified the top ten companies that do it best.

  4. American Systems 
  5. LMI
  6. PRISM
  7. MSA Security
  8. U.S. Customs and Border Protection
  9. IntelliDyne, LLC
  10. AbleVets, LLC

Three of these companies — DynCorp International, Intelligent Waves, and AbleVets, LLC — are veteran-owned companies. Four of them — Intelligent Waves, CACI, PRISM, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection — are repeat winners.
