The median age for NC veterans is 61 years old, with almost a third of the state's veterans having served in Vietnam. It's odd milk has been the official state beverage since 1987, since  Asheville is home to the largest number of breweries per capita of any city in the US.

The state has music in its blood.  John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Billy Taylor and Nina Simone all come from NC, but the music doesn’t stop there... more American Idol finalists are from NC than any other state.

Music is nice, but the state has a rough side to it too, the Outer Banks (OBX), a 200-mile-long string of barrier islands has a long-held nickname of “The Graveyard of the Atlantic,” The OBX is now home to more than 1,000 ship wrecks.  Many could be blamed on one Mr.  Edward Teach, also known as the infamous pirate Blackbeard, who used to love plundering in the area.  Blackbeard was killed off the coast of North Carolina on November 22, 1718.

North Carolina will tax military retirement pay.  If you have five years of service since Aug. 12, 1989 you are fully exempt.  If not, you can deduct up to $4,000 per year or $8,000 if filing joint returns.

  • Property Tax Relief. The first $45,000 of the appraised value of the permanent residence of an honorably discharged veteran with a total and permanent, service-connected disability is not taxed. Same for veterans who receive special adaptive housing benefits. There is no age or income limitation for this. The benefit is available to the unmarried surviving spouse of honorably discharged disabled veterans. Contact local county tax office for applications.

  • Scholarship for Children of Wartime Veterans. The scholarship program applies to North Carolina schools and is for eight semesters. The recipient has eight years to use this. Applicants must be under 25 years old, and the child of a deceased, disabled, combat or POW/MIA veteran. You must reside in the state at the time of the application.

  • Veterans, and some spouses, receive preference points when testing for state jobs. Eligibility requirements: a veteran with an honorable discharge and who served during a period of war; the spouse of a disabled veteran; surviving spouse of a veteran who died on active duty; veterans with a service-connected permanent disability. You must attach a copy of your DD-214 with your application for state employment.
  • North Carolina Department of Commerce Veteran Services. Provides help for job seekers or services for veterans, transitioning service members and eligible spouses.

Cemetery and Burial

  • North Carolina is home to four State Veteran Cemeteries, located in Jacksonville, Black Mountain, Goldsboro and Salisbury. Each Cemetery has a local office, but it is important to note that the Federal Veterans Administration oversees the program and can assist in meeting the costs associated with burial and funeral costs.
  • Eligibility Determination Form.  Pre-needs determination is intended to simplify and assist the veteran’s next-of-kin at the time of death.  This does not reserve a plot or niche at the cemetery.  There is no cost for this.
