Head down to Nationals Park this weekend to see two Marine teams battle it out for the championship softball title in Battle of the Bases.

The Battle of the Bases, a championship softball tournament featuring local military softball base teams will take place Sept. 14, shortly after the Washington Nationals/Atlanta Braves game at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

“We’re competitive and we're just having fun. I think it’s every childhood boys' dream to play in a major league stadium someday…it’s a bonus that we’re playing against other Marines," said Gunnery Sergeant Jeffrey Higgs, Chief Recording Engineer for the Marine Band.

The matchup culminates a season-long softball tournament which featured teams from various bases in the National Capital Region. Two Marine teams: The President’s Own (which is the Marine Band team) and the Marine Corps Base Quantico Finance Team will vye for the championship title this weekend.

"We wanted to work with servicemen and women and their families on the bases, where they live, where they work, and where they play and we thought what a better way would it be for a professional baseball team to support the softball team on the actual bases," said Gregory McCarthy, our SVP of community engagement of the Washington Nationals.

Battle of the Bases is part of larger programming within the Nats on Base initiative, which allows service members and their families in the greater D.C. area to participate in events right in their community.

And to make it even more official, during the season, 2,500 service members from 13 military installations have been able to wear special Washington Nationals uniforms for the games.

"The military is founded on teamwork,..while there was a great competition and they certainly wanted to win, there's a lot of mutual support among the final 130 teams," said McCarthy.

The event will kick off at 8:00 pm or 30 minutes after the last out of the game against the Braves.

For special ticket offers to attend both games, visit the event website. If you're only looking to attend the softball championship, admission is free. Gates will open at 7:30 pm at Nationals Park.
