Grunt Style, Ranger Up, and Awesome Sh*t My Drill Sergeant Said…the list goes on. There are a lot of veteran owned clothing businesses. In what some would call an oversaturated market, it can be important to find your niche. Shah Chowdhury found his in Assault Forward.

Shah earned his commission in the Army in 2001, ten days before September 11. After getting out in 2005, he used the G.I. Bill to go to graduate school at the University of Maryland. There, he met two like-minded friends who would eventually go into business with him.

They realized that, since they were professionals, they couldn’t wear Grunt Style t-shirts and the like to work, but they knew they wanted to represent themselves as veterans. With this in mind, they created Assault Forward.

“Assault Forward is an e-commerce retail accessories and apparel brand for professional veterans and patriotic Americans,” Shah says. “Everything we sell is made in America.”

Being e-commerce, Assault Forward stores most of its wares in Shah’s basement. In fact, Assault Forward is, as of now, a second job for Shah and his friends.

“I don’t like to call it a side project, as I put a lot of time and effort into Assault Forward,” said Chowdhury.

They currently sell inverse flag lapel pins cuff links, coffee mugs, and magnet and sticker sets, but are soon hoping to expand.

Chowdhury said, “Eventually, we want to start selling golf shirts and business casual things, because so many people have asked for them.”

When asked what advice he would give a fellow vet who had a “million dollar idea,” he says the best thing to do, is simply to do. “I think the one big thing is to just do it. Execute, execute. A lot of people out there I have seen have ideas, but they never become more than ideas.”
